Conley is amazing and really knows how to teach. Everything is very simplified and his tests are almost identical to his practice exams.
His second midterm did catch me by surprise as it was stuff that we covered in class very briefly so watch out, but other than that everything else was pretty straight forward. Going to miss his class
conley has a knack for explaining the more abstract concepts covered in this course in an easily accessible way. as a lecturer he was very thorough and clear, albeit a little slow at times. as a result, the class was consistently behind his posted syllabus. i can appreciate him taking his time to make sure everyone understood the concepts being taught, although i would have preferred a faster pace myself. conley also tends to exclude complicated proofs from his lectures, which may or may not be a positive depending on the level of rigor you want in your understanding. overall 5/7 perf would recommend
Conley is very good at explaining topics, patient, clearly loves teaching, and cares about student learning. Class moves a little slowly (so is sometimes boring) but in my opinion, it's nice to have a class that doesn't move at lightening speed like most other core bio major classes. It reduces stress and therefore encourages enjoyment.
This man was born to teach! I took his class a year ago and just had to go back to write this review! He was incredible! Made me change my mind completely about the LS math series! He legitimately would stay up until 11pm at review sessions until every student had no more questions, god his arms must hurt from writing on the board for almost 5 hours straight without a bathroom break. He truly truly cares about his students and their understanding of the material. I didn't have to even study that much for his class because I felt like I could absorb everything from lecture. Another incredible thing about Conley (who was recommended to me by like 10 people) is that he incorporates the coding into the lectures so it makes it relevant (something other LS30 professors have no clue how). Overally, probably one of the best professors I've ever had. He was always energetic and excited to teach the material because he loves LS30. It made a bad expereince for me (LS30A with Garfinkel) into a complete turnaround and I even LA for LS30B now... Thank you Conley, UCLA doesn't deserve you! He should be teaching at Harvard or something!!
Like always, Conley is a gift from heaven and God's second son. To get straight to the details, if you are coming from 30A the labs are much, much easier. Conley still teaches over the :50 time limit, so if you have a class right after his lecture rethink your class choice. Outside of that Conley was darling. I would take this class with him over and over and over again. But, like Conley always, the final was MUCH harder than the midterms. Watch out, boys.
Probably the best lecturer I've had so far in UCLA. To be honest, I went through a lot of LS30A not understanding what the purpose of the class was. But with Conley, he made everything I learned in LS 30A so much clearer from just the very first day in LS 30B. He was really good at explaining the topics in simplest way possible, and his notes on the whiteboards are super easy to follow. I could copy them down and remember exactly what he said when I look back on the notes. He also makes sure to show us how one thing connects to another.
The labs/coding can be tricky, but it actually makes a lot more sense once you get it because he briefly mentions during the week's lecture what the lab is suppose to show regarding the topic.
His review sessions are super helpful. They take a while, as he goes over ALL the material in a condensed form, and he takes all the time necessary to answer the students' questions. It's really nice of him to take the time to hold review sessions as a professor instead of just pushing those to the TA's.
Overall wonderful professor, take him if you can.
Take the LS30 series. Don't take the 3 series. TAKE CONLEY. TAKE CONLEY. TAKE CONLEY. Professor Conley was the best professor I had during my entire freshman year at UCLA, and I am sure he will be on of the best during my years to come. It is clear that he is there to make sure his students learn and know the material inside and out. I personally loved LS30B much more than LS30A. The course as a whole is very interesting and not too difficult at all as long as you take the time to review the material. His review sessions are LEGENDARY!!! He will take the time to reteach all of the material relevant to the upcoming exam in a manner that connects all of the bits and pieces together. Conley's review sessions for the first and second midterms were at least 4 hours each, and he is always willing to go as long as needed so that all questions are answered. For the final review session, he almost went for a full 6 hours. This man is absolutely amazing. You will not regret taking his class; it will make your freshman year so much better.
The first day of class I was really surprised by his stamina and alertness in class . I prefer his style of lecturing which is writing what he says on the board. He always goes over lecture time, (like up to 5 minutes) but he does recap at the beginning of each lecture so it won't be bad if you absolutely need to leave. He makes sure people are engaged and ask for people to answer questions. His test are tricky since he like asking for responses on the subjects we learned than just focusing on the math, which is good. What I really enjoyed about him is that he actively shows how what we're learning is connected to the code we're doing in lab and vice versa. His really invested in his students, and if you talk to him once he'll remember your name(which is rare in stem core classes). He is very helpful after lecture, and during office hours. He also hosts super long and thorough test reviews(very helpful). Most of my critiques come with how new this course is and how they are constantly developing the labs and textbooks, so it's difficult to adjust to that.
PROFESSOR CONLEY IS THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO UCLA.
I just want to thank Professor Conley for his dedication and support to his students. He is absolutely the best teacher and person ever.
I got a B+ in his 30A class and was super disappointed in myself, therefore I decided to go to his office hours religiously (every week) which was super helpful for homework and upcoming tests. (He does throw some curveballs on the tests.) And in office hours I learned that he is really the greatest teacher ever!
His office hours really really helped me, and his review sessions were (long) but super helpful. He also posts multiple practice tests and reuses some old questions you can find on tests at the test banks.
His lectures are fun and engaging, he does a lot of clicker questions for participation, so very easy points, you don't need to get the questions right! He writes down everything on the board, and as long as you copy everything down you're in good shape.
For labs, he doesn't give you a lab final (thank god!).
Warning: The first midterm material is really really easy, but it gets harder as the quarter continues. The material on the final is WAY WAY harder than what we learned in the beginning of the quarter.
but conclusion: TAKE PROFESSOR CONLEY AT ALL COSTS, HE IS THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER!!!
Conley is the goat! Name another professor who hosts 6 hour review sessions to help students prepare for the final. He truly cares about teaching and wants to see students succeed. He uploads practice exams on CCLE before each test, and they are the best way to prepare for midterms and finals. The labs are annoying, but generally boost your grade.
