I took this class online. Most of the students (including me) had already taken AP Calc AB in high school and had most of the knowledge already. That being said, it was relatively easy for me as I knew most of the topics already. If you do not already have some experience with calculus, he may not be great for you. His teaching style is a little messy and random, but not awful. His lectures include a lot of examples, which worked well for my learning style. Tests are not bad plus we had 24 full hours because it was online. Overall, he was decent but not exceptional.
At first, this class began very disorganized and confusing. Lectures were jumbled and we were not on track as far as the syllabus said. As the quarter continued, did I really see the changes. The professor became very organized, he had time stamps on the side of his notes, clearly showing that we were both on track in terms of what was to be covered in the lecture, as well as made clear that he had gone through the material before hand.
Grading was fair. There was no curve, but as long as you did all the homework and did decent on exams, you would be fine. He takes criticism well and made it clear that any suggestions on improvement were welcome.
This quarter, the professor for this class was alright. Much of the material covered in this class I learned in AP Calc which was kind of helpful. He does record the lectures which was good. I hated the midterms, for the first midterm I got all questions correct except one of them and I ended up getting a B on it. For most of the quarter he did offer extra credit, but stopped towards the end of the quarter. The $125 textbook is too overpriced :/ The very last day of the quarter he said he would curve the final grade to a B no matter how people did on the final, but then he sent an email saying he wasn't going to do that anymore, lame.
Professor Wumaier is incredibly helpful and kind. Having taken single variable calculus in high school, his class offered me a good refreshment of what I might have forgotten. The exams are fairly graded and you will do well as long as you understand all the concepts and do the homework practice.
The class was well organized and the professor always worked according to the syllabus. The midterms were fairly easy (watch out for specific questions in midterm 2). There are several opportunities for extra credit so make sure you attend the lectures to stay on track with that. Finals covered all the tough topics but there was enough time to ace it. DO TAKE HIS CLASS FOR AN EASY A.
this professor is honestly the best guy i've ever seen. he gives so many opportunities for extra credit- land up at his office hours, solve a question and BAM! u get extra credit. his tests are super fair and I found it really really easy to do (I have a history of doing math till multivariable calc in HS so i might be biased by saying this) but i haven't seen a single student hate on him for his tests so there you go. he is super helpful and super responsive to emails and questions you might have. the TAs are super smart guys as well and they also have office hours to go and clear doubts. the only drawback of this class is that he required us to get a 125$ textbook just to get a code to access online hw. I havent used the textbook ONCE and i dont have 125$ to throw for nothing. other than this, his class is an easy A with little to average amounts of work. I feel so happy for having taken his class and would definitely go back again. If you are new to this class, as you might be, read up on a few topics before entering the class so its an easy breeze for you, if not then dont worry, its still very learnable with him. thanks mr. maimaitiyiming <3 (short guy with a long name, jk)
if youve never taken ap calc or any other calc class then do NOT take this class. i took ap calc bc in high school so i was lucky enough to understand. the prof kinda expects you to know some of the topics so he never really went into detail with the examples. the examples he did in class DID NOT match what was on the midterm/final. he did offer extra credit during office hours tho but that was only towards the end of the quarter. this class was overall ok since the homework/workload was manageable but i do not recommend.
I don't have massive issues with the class or the professor, but I do think the exams this year were a little more difficult than they needed to be. Other than that, the structure of the class (homework, discussions, etc) was pretty good. I took AP Calc AB in high school, so a lot of the material was review, but I know the pacing is a little fast for those who are new to calculus. If you're taking this class, make sure you study the hardest homework questions for the exams and find additional review for your weak points.
I would take 31A with Professor Wumaier again. His lectures were straightforward and clear; he mainly derived theorems and worked out practice problems in class. He posted blank notes before class so students could print them out/download them before lecture.
Discussion work was fairly simple. Each discussion we were given a worksheet to complete by the end of the week. For discussions close to exams, we were not given worksheets and TAs just went over practice problems.
Homework was assigned through Achieve. Overall hw was not incredibly time consuming. There were probably at most three homework modules that gave me trouble and took a while. Hw was due at the end of the week. I will say that most of the content on the hws does not show up on the exams.
Exams were very fair. Professor posts practice problem sets and a practice exam and holds a review session. The exams were very similar to the practice exam.
Professor Wumaier is very helpful during office hours and offered a lot of extra credit. He was incredibly generous with grading at the end of the quarter. He added extra credit, dropped the lowest hw/worksheet, and decided whether scheme 1 (final worth 39%) or scheme 2 (final worth 54%) would give a better grade.
In all, 31A with Professor Wumaier gave me a good foundation in calculus and the workload and difficulty was reasonable.
I honestly really enjoyed this class. Professor Maimaitiyiming goes over the material clearly and in depth, in my opinion. The class is a bit fast paced, but that is honestly just how it is with the quarter system. He gave a lot of opportunities to ask questions and always answered them in his office hours. In his office hours he also gave extra credit opportunities, which were helpful if you needed the extra boost! Exams were similar to the practice exam and somewhat similar to the practice problems and you should be fine if you understand the concepts behind everything.
I personally thought the book was helpful especially since it allows you to go at your own pace when reviewing materials! i also found it helpful to do a lot of the practice problems in the book.
