Quarter: Spring 2020
Grade: A

He is a good professor, like most of the professors in the LS series. One thing about him I don't particularly enjoy is that he talks sooooooo sloowww. Good thing his lectures are pre-recorded so I can put it on 1.5 or 2x speed. He is clear, but I wish he would have in person Zoom lectures so we can ask questions in person.

Professor Esdin was great, but this class was relatively difficult this quarter. Everyone seemed to score low on quizzes. However the curve was very generous. Im sure next quarter will be much better. I have the course reader from Winter (I bought it off someone) but it has mostly the same info he went over. You can buy it off me for $35 (including shipping) email me emilyvee557@gmail.com

Quarter: Spring 2020
Grade: A

I took this class online which was slightly more work than in person, but Dr. Esdin is super chill and none of the tests or quizzes were monitored. He gives a lot of information but it is the same info that is in the course reader, so it's not too difficult. The labs were sometimes confusing, but they weren't on the midterm or final so you don't have to really know the info except for the lab quizzes. At the end, he pretty much boosts everyone's grades. Also there is a big project, but as long as you do it, you'll get a good grade. It takes time, but it isn't hard. Take this for an easy lab GE.

Quarter: Spring 2020
Grade: A+

Note: This review is from Spring 2020, a quarter conducted remotely because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Professor Esdin's style of teaching online took a bit of adjustment but after the first few weeks, I began to get in the rhythm of it all. His lectures were rather straightforward, with much of the material also found in the course reader--which was required for the class since it included the iProfile account--so briefly skimming the course reader after or before lecture helped make the information rather easy to retain. The labs were independent of the lectures, meaning that knowledge from one did not help--and in fact, can hurt--performance in the other.

Professor Esdin's grading scheme seemed student-friendly. Rather than having just a few, point-heavy assessments, he distributed the points across the entire quarter, with multiple (5) lecture quizzes and lab quizzes. In my opinion, these quizzes were harder than the midterm and the final because they were even more specific since they only spanned one chapter each. A big assignment was the lifestyle assessment report, which had you track your diet and activity and report on your findings: this was a bit time-consuming, but not excessive. At the end of the quarter, Professor Esdin took into account the social unrest surrounding the Black Lives Matter movement and gave everyone an 80/80 on the final/

TL;DR: Professor Esdin's lectures and course reader delved deep into the since behind health in our body, while the grading scheme distributed points across a cornucopia of things to lessen the stress of one individual assignment or exam.

Quarter: Spring 2020
Grade: A

I took 7C online during quarantine. Personally I would say 7C is the hardest of the LS series so be prepared to study and give yourself a lot of time to do the Launchpad thoroughly. Also I did not watch the videos in 7A or 7B that are embedded in Launchpad but you definitely should for this class. I would recommend studying at least a week in advance for each midterm. Professor Esdin is a good lecturer and goes at a nice pace so every clicker is explained well. He gave everyone 100% on the final due to covid-19 and the protests too so he is very understanding. I do wish he did better review sessions because they were only 30 minute long pre-recorded videos that just went over the topics briefly so you definitely need to do the studying on your own.

Summary
- Esdin is a good professor (if you get him don't be worried)
- This class takes a lot of time to study for (most content heavy out of the LS series)
- GO TO CLC SESSIONS (I only went to one and I really wish I went to them all it would've
helped a lot!!!)

One of the most useful/applicable-to-life classes you'll take at UCLA. Professor Esdin was super flexible in helping students even amidst the pandemic and made accommodations to make our lives a bit easier. The final project can be a little tedious/daunting, but the TAs prepare you well for it.

Quarter: Spring 2020
Grade: A

Only gripe with this class that I took during the online quarter was that I believe all of the 7 series exams added a written portion to compensate for the online format of exams by adding an unnecessary component to an already tough exam. The final 7 series course was otherwise pretty much what I expected from the 7 series. Launchpad is tedious but necessary. Discussions were tedious but necessary. No clicker questions during lecture though- participation was graded on a couple simple questions per lecture.

Quarter: Summer 2020

Dr. Esdin was very accommodating during the remote summer session and he always had our best interest at heart. There were a lot of quizzes (lecture quiz and a separate quiz based on a weekly paper) and daily participation quizzes. The final paper was pretty extensive but he gives you an interesting topic and enough time to do it. The exams were tough; we were allowed to use our notes but it was not helpful for the exams. Overall, this was an amazing class and I highly recommend!

Love Dr. Esdin ! I took PhySci 5 online spring quarter and he adapted to online learning so well. His lectures never went overtime, were always recorded, and he is very good at communicating with his students. All lectures and exams are very straightforward, and the final project is tedious but easy. Highly recommend this class as a GE, or even for personal information honestly.
