If you want to get an A in this class, or even enjoy this class at all, I highly suggest that you avoid taking it with Professor Khankan. I very rarely dislike professors beyond their grading scheme, but I disliked almost everything about her teaching method. She is sarcastic and funny, and she knows her material. However, I felt like she didn't try at all to be helpful throughout the course. She was condescending, her tests were RIDICULOUSLY hard, and the workload was absolutely ridiculous. Not only that, but I genuinely felt like she did not care about her students or how they were learning the class material. Really did not enjoy this class with her.
Took Dr. Khankan for LS3 during Winter 2017. She was not a viable teacher to teach this course nor was she interested in well being of her students. The fact that no one got a 100 or 98 on either of her midterms shows that there is something seriously lacking in her teaching approach. She is not flexible when it comes to helping students nor is she concerned about her students' performance on her examinations. She does not seem all that knowledgeable about the course material and it is evident that professorship is a mandated activity for her research career here at UCLA. While I ended up getting an A in LS3, it was definitely one heck of a quarter with two hard midterm exams and a hard final. The class was apparently "straight" scaled but in reality it was eventually curved due to the low distribution of scores.
This class was surprisingly tolerable. I heard so many bad things about Khankan from other Bruinwalk reviews, but she wasn't that bad. I mean she wasn't amazing, but she wasn't too horrible. Yes, the class isn't the most exciting and she spends way too much time waiting for clickers, but that's not the worst thing in the world. Exams are hard as expected. The questions are stereotypically "tricky" like the rest of the LS series. You have to memorize more info than the other LS classes, but not too bad. Overall, she's the not the best, not the worst, but it's not the end of the world if you end up stuck with her. Plus she gives 8 points of extra credit or something at the end of the course, and also since our class did above 75 average, the class ended up not being curved. But like all the other classes just do the clickers, do the discussion section, and the launchpad stuff and you get almost half the points given to you free A, so you just need like an 88 or whatever to get an A. Overall, not that bad.
Took 7A and 7C with her and am so glad I did. Her lectures are bruincasted so you can go back and listen to explanations for things like clicker questions, which she also explains very clearly (better than the other professors according to my friends in another 7C lecture).
Took Khankan in fall 2018. She's a pretty good teacher, but there's a lot of material to memorize. If you're interested in getting the answers to previous launchpad PEQs and PCRQs, email me at jeremypeter33@gmail.com
This class is definitely the most difficult of the 7 series, but Khankan is good at explaining difficult physiological concepts. Launchpad can be tedious, but all of the answers are online on quizlet so getting most points shouldn’t be too difficult. Exams are definitely challenging but not impossible.
As said before, I found this class to be the most difficult of the 7 series just because there's so much information. But that's not a result of the professors, - all 7 series classes use Launchpad and same exam format. Khankan explained concepts and clickers better than the other professors I've had for the 7 series, and her lectures are Bruincasted so you can always go and hear back how she explained something before any tests, which is really helpful.
My favourite professor yet! She adopted the LS7 series format really well into her teaching style, which made me love the class and made my concepts really really clear. She collaborated what we learnt on Launchpad with the clickers in class, which was not always the case in previous LS7 classes. She gave us enough time during clicker questions, and explained them afterwards in a straightforward, knowledgeable, easy-to-comprehend manner. Take her if you can! And attend her office hours, whether or not you have questions - she answers questions that people have in a lecture-like style so it will emphasize the concepts that have already been covered in class and will make them stick in your head. Just attend all her classes and pay attention to the explanation she gives for the clicker questions and you'll be fine in the midterms and final.
Khankan has such engaging lectures and she really explains the many processes well. She breaks down every clicker question and emphasizes what we need to know and what we don't. Definitely take her or Esdin if you get the chance.
The tests are confusing because of the wording, and the TAs can't really answer any clarification question which sucks, but I generally performed the same on 7C tests as 7A/B. Definitely focus on how to read diagrams and apply the information to problems- like if blood pressure rises how does it affect the production of this hormone, etc. If you haven't been to the LA learning sessions yet, this is the class to start going to them. In them you can practice with what kinds of diagrams will show up on the tests, and the LAs are good at explaining things in an understandable way.
Professor Khankan is one of the more engaging lecturers in the life science department. She knows the material very well and is able to answer almost all questions. If she is not able to answer a question, she knows where to direct you to find the answer. The format is the same as every other life science 7 class: Iclicker participation grades every class, discussion sections with worksheets, multiple choice exams, etc. Overall, this course isn’t too bad if you stay on top of the launchpad and know the discussion worksheets, especially the graphs and charts.
