Professor Khankan is amazing! She is extremely sweet and kind and she's just an amazing lecturer. I was scared to take her and Professor Zamudio's class at first because of her bad reviews, but I don't regret taking it at all. The class gets difficult at times with wording on tests, but I still learned a lot from Professor Khankan and her awesome TAs. Definitely take this class with her if you can
Khankan is one of the best biology teachers, and to be quite frank blows all the other 7 series instructors out of the water. She is so helpful and incredibly engaging in her lectures. I had the pleasure of having her for 7A and 7C so I was quite aware on how she runs a class. Since this is 7C you should be somewhat aware how they structure test, and I would say 7C has the more easier tests, though that may just be because the content in this class is more enjoyable than the other classes. I can guarantee that you will not have a bad time with class if you take it with Khankan.
Khankan was a fairly average LS professor. Her lectures are generally pretty clear and she is articulate enough. However, I think Khankan sped too fast through explaining clicker questions and I wish she gave less time for us to click in and more time to explain the answer. Pre-test review sessions were also just 50 minute Q&A sessions which really are not helpful at all. Lastly, I thought LS7C tests were worded even worse than LS7A and 7B tests (didn't know this was possible) but I am not positive whether Khankan makes her own tests. Overall, standard LS professor and a standard LS class with launchpad, clickers, true/false questions on tests, etc. but slightly more difficult (more memorization, homework makes for a smaller % of the grade, worse tests).
If you've gotten this far in the 7 series you know the material, slides, and tests are entirely independent of the professor. In terms of difficulty, there should be no difference in taking this class with Professor Khankan or any other professor in the department. She is, however, very engaging, funny, and approachable. Her classes are structured well, she doesn't leave any confusion in the clicker questions and explains concepts in depth. She's the best professor I've taken in the series (Deb Pires is also very structured and knows the material but boy is she rude and unapproachable). I heard a lot of horror stories about the class itself, it honestly wasn't that bad. Maybe it was because I enjoyed the material infinitely more than 7A and 7B but training yourself to understand what the purpose is using clicker questions really helps in knowing which concepts to answer in the midterms. The hardest/least interesting part for me was the last few weeks where the focus shifts to gene editing but thankfully we were given the option to opt-out of the final due to covid-19 closures.
Professor Khankan did a really great job explaining the material! She's a really great lecturer, so if you have the chance, I would take it with her. To study for the midterm and final, I would just watch her bruincasts and it was enough.
She's harsh in class, but I emailed her about a private matter a few times and she was very kind and accommodating.
Dr. Khankan is hands down the best professor I've had so far at UCLA. She teaches with such a passion and will happily answer everyone's questions with diagrams and drawings that make it so much easier to understand. I've heard a lot of scary stories about 7C but it's really not bad- the material is dense but it's so interesting and if you stay on top of it by going to Khankan's office hours (which are VERY helpful!!) then you will be fine! This has actually been my favorite class in the 7 series. Definitely take it with Khankan- you won't be let down and will end up learning a lot more because she brings in relevant info from current projects going on in science, plus discusses her research as a post-grad a bit which is super fascinating.
Professor Kankan is by far the best professor I have had for the LS 7 series and would recommend her to everyone. Her lectures are very clear and easy to understand. She truly seems to care about helping students understand the material and do well on the exams, which are themselves standard for the 7 series.
Before I get into details, I want to note that the curriculum covered in this class is extremely difficult, but Prof Khankan makes it so easy to understand. I took 7C spring '20 which was probably one of the most difficult times for students, and this class was actually taught as a hybrid with another professor this quarter. Not to bash the other professor, but I felt much more confident in what I learned when Prof. Khankan was teaching. She is so enthusiastic about this topic which is so important as a student trying to stay motivated. Her lectures are very clear, she did a wonderful job with the switch to online learning. I think the most important thing to consider is the way she handled this change. She showed her character by being very prepared and organized going into this, and also through her accommodations toward the end of the quarter. 5 stars for this woman, protect her at all costs
I actually didn't have this professor. But I crashed her Zoom lectures multiple times and went to her Office Hours often. She explains everything SO WELL. Words cannot describe how amazing she is. She genuinely cares for all students' learning. Tests in LS series are always difficult, but Dr.Khankan explains concepts really well. She is also a very fun person to engage a conversation with. She was Hedrick Hall's staff in residence and participated in many dorm activities. She is truly a wonderful person and I love her so much. If I had to rate her on a scale of 10, she would get a solid 100.
